The Nebraska Specialty Plates form is a document designed for vehicle owners in Nebraska who wish to apply for specialty license plates. It provides a space for the registered owner's information, vehicle details, and the selection of a specific message or design from a variety of options including causes, hobbies, and interests. Instructions on how to complete and submit the application, along with details on plate pick-up locations and fees, are included to guide applicants through the process.

In the state of Nebraska, vehicle owners have the opportunity to personalize their driving experience and express their support for various causes through the Application for Specialty Plates. This form allows residents to request custom-designed plates with themes ranging from wildlife conservation and cancer awareness to supporting troops and celebrating Nebraska's heritage. The process is comprehensive, requiring registrants to provide detailed information, including the registered owner's name, address, vehicle type (such as passenger, motorcycle, or trailer), and vehicle identification details. Applicants can choose from a wide array of plate designs for which additional fees apply, according to the cause they wish to support or the message they wish to convey. Notably, the form also accommodates special categories including plates for leased vehicles and non-resident military personnel. Instructions for selecting a message for the plate ensure that applicants select a preferred option that aligns with state guidelines, avoiding any that could be construed as objectionable or offensive. Additionally, the form outlines pick-up locations for residents of Douglas and Lancaster County, while also detailing the financial obligations associated with the application, including the no-refund policy and a processing fee for returned checks. It is essential for applicants to carefully read the reverse side of the form and visit the designated website for message availability and further information. This process not only personalizes the vehicle owner's experience but also contributes to funding for the causes represented by the specialty plates. Completing this application is a straightforward step toward showcasing one’s passions and commitments on Nebraska roads.

Selecting a Message

Make certain that each choice listed is acceptable to you. Your first available choice will be processed.

Once your application has been processed your message choice cannot be changed.

Messages that conflict with present numbering system or a valid set of plates currently registered will not be processed. Due to the issuance of alpha/numeric plates in some counties messages containing three alpha followed by three numeric characters (ABC 123) cannot be processed regardless of spacing.

Messages determined by the DMV to express, connote, or imply objectionable, obscene or offensive words or phrases will be rejected or, if already issued, recalled and cancelled.

Message availability may be checked at: https://dmv.nebraska.gov/services Note: There is no guarantee when a choice shows available that it is the message the applicant will receive.

Fee: A check or money order for the proper amount indicated on the front of this application must be included with your application or it will be returned unprocessed. No refunds are allowed. A $30.00 processing fee is assessed for all returned checks. Specialty plate renewal fees are due annually in the same month as the vehicle registration. All renewal fees are paid to the County Treasurer Motor Vehicle Office. Note: If new plates are registered to a vehicle in a month other than the month the vehicle’s current registration expires; the specialty plate renewal fee will be required when the vehicle’s registration is due.

Approval: After the application has been processed an approval letter is sent to the applicant. The letter indicates the approved message or indicates the number assigned if the application was for a consecutive number plate, the date the plates will be available at the County Treasurer Motor Vehicle Office and their telephone number to verify the Treasurer has received the plates. Current plates and registration must be surrendered when the specialty plates are registered. Additional fees for production of the license plates and new registration will be charged. Please allow 4 to 6 weeks for the plates to arrive at the County Treasurer Motor Vehicle Office.

Guide to Using Nebraska Specialty Plates

After deciding to personalize your vehicle with a Nebraska Specialty Plate, it's time to complete the application form. This process involves selecting your desired plate design and message, providing information about yourself and your vehicle, and submitting the application with the correct fee. By following these steps, you'll ensure your application is processed smoothly.

  1. Start by entering the registered owner's information, including the name, address, city, state (NE), ZIP code, and phone number. Ensure the name listed is the same as the registered owner on the vehicle title.
  2. In the Vehicle Information section, mark the type of vehicle you are registering the plates for, such as Passenger, Motorcycle/Autocycle, or Trailer.
  3. Fill in the vehicle's VIN (Vehicle Identification Number), the current plate number, title number, and the county where the vehicle is registered.
  4. If the vehicle is leased, provide the lessor's name.
  5. For residents of Douglas or Lancaster County, select the office location where you will pick up your plates.
  6. Move on to the Specialty Plate Options section. Choose the plate design you prefer and whether you'd like a message or numeric plate. Note the character limits for your selection.
  7. For a message plate, indicate your first, second, and third choices for the plate message, along with the meaning of your request. This helps ensure your message is available and meets the DMV requirements.
  8. Review the selection criteria for messages carefully to avoid choosing a message that may be rejected due to conflict with the numbering system, current registrations, or for being objectionable.
  9. Include a check or money order for the correct amount indicated on the front of the application. Remember, no refunds are given, and there is a $30.00 processing fee for returned checks.
  10. Before sending your application, double-check all information for accuracy. Missing or incorrect information can delay the processing.
  11. Mail your completed application and payment to the indicated address: PO Box 94789, Lincoln, NE 68509.

Your application will be processed once received, and you'll be sent an approval letter detailing your plate's production and pick-up information. Remember to surrender your current plates and registration when you pick up your new specialty plates. An additional fee for the production of the license plates and new registration will be charged at that time. Allow 4 to 6 weeks for the specialty plates to arrive at your designated County Treasurer Motor Vehicle Office.

How can I check the availability of a specific message for a specialty plate?

Message availability for specialty plates can be checked online at the Nebraska DMV’s website. Visit https://dmv.nebraska.gov/services to search for the message you’re interested in. Keep in mind that availability may change, and there’s no guarantee a shown available message will be assigned to you.

What are some examples of specialty plate options available in Nebraska?

Nebraska provides a range of specialty plate themes including, but not limited to:

  • Breast Cancer Awareness
  • Choose Life
  • Mountain Lion Conservation
  • Support Our Troops

What is the process for ordering specialty plates as a gift?

If the specialty plates are intended as a gift, you should fill out the application with the name and information of the vehicle’s registered owner. Additionally, attach the name and contact information of the person to be contacted if necessary, and provide details on where the approval receipt should be sent.

Specialty plate fees vary depending on the design and whether it's a numeric or message plate. Fees on the application form are listed as follows:

  • Message plates typically cost $40.00, with some exceptions.
  • Numeric plates often have a fee of $5.00.
  • Special plates like Husker and Support Our Troops have different fees, and detailed information is available on the application form.

Remember, a check or money order for the appropriate amount must be included with your application.

How long does it take to receive specialty plates after approval?

After your application is processed and approved, the DMV sends an approval letter with detailed information including the date the plates will be available at your local County Treasurer Motor Vehicle Office. It typically takes 4 to 6 weeks for the plates to arrive. You will need to surrender your current plates and registration when registering your new specialty plates.

Are there any specific rules for using specialty plates on vehicles in Nebraska?

Yes, specific rules apply depending on the plate type. For example, vehicles with Special Interest plates cannot be used for business or as a primary mode of transportation. These are meant for collectors and can only be driven for occasional transportation, public displays, parades, and related activities. It’s important to read the specialty plate instructions carefully to ensure compliance with Nebraska DMV regulations.

Common mistakes

When applying for Nebraska Specialty Plates, individuals often encounter certain pitfalls that can delay or complicate their application process. Understanding these common mistakes can streamline the process significantly. These mistakes range from inaccuracies in personal information to overlooked details about vehicle eligibility.

Firstly, inaccurate or incomplete owner information poses a significant issue. The form requests specific details about the registered owner, including name, address, city, state, ZIP, and phone number. Incomplete or inaccurate information here can lead to delays in processing the application or even its outright rejection.

Another common mistake is not specifying the correct vehicle type. Applicants must check one of the boxes to indicate whether their vehicle is a passenger vehicle (which includes pickups, SUVs, trucks, RVs), a motorcycle/autocycle, or a trailer (such as a mini truck or mobile home). Failing to select the appropriate category can cause confusion and potentially incorrect plate issuance.

The form also requires detailed vehicle information including the VIN, current plate number, title number, county of registration, and county number. Incorrect or incomplete vehicle information can hinder the process. Particularly, the VIN and current plate number are crucial for identifying the vehicle in the DMV's system.

  1. Not checking the correct vehicle type box can lead to the applicant receiving the wrong type of plate, specifically designed for a different vehicle category than intended.
  2. Overlooking the importance of specifying the leasing company's name if the vehicle is leased is another mistake. This information is crucial for processing the application, especially since leased vehicles have a different titling process In Nebraska.
  3. Ignoring office location selection for plate pick-up, particularly for residents of Douglas or Lancaster County, is a frequently overlooked step. This decision aligns with facilitating a convenient pick-up location for the applicants.
  4. Choosing inappropriate license plate messages or not adhering to the character limit can delay approval. Messages that are deemed objectionable or that do not meet the DMV’s criteria can be rejected.
  5. Failing to include the correct fee with the application or neglecting to consider the additional costs associated with certain plate types can halt the application process. Moreover, a lack of attention to the renewal fees and the impact on vehicle registration timelines can create future inconveniences.
  6. Lastly, not surrendering current plates and registration upon specialty plate registration completion can lead to inconsistencies in the DMV’s records, potentially affecting legal vehicle use.

Ensuring all sections of the application are completed correctly and that all necessary information is accurate can expedite the specialty plate acquisition process. It’s also essential for applicants to thoroughly review the instructions provided on the application form and the DMV website to avoid these common mistakes.

Documents used along the form

When a vehicle owner in Nebraska decides to apply for Specialty Plates, several other documents or forms may be necessary to support their application, depending on their unique situation. The process is designed to customize the vehicle registration experience, allowing residents to showcase their support for causes, interests, or affiliations through their vehicle plates. Let's explore some of the supplementary documents that often accompany the Nebraska Specialty Plates form, enhancing the personalization process while ensuring regulatory compliance.

  • Proof of Insurance: This document verifies that the vehicle for which the specialty plates are being requested is currently insured according to state law. It's a standard requirement for most, if not all, vehicle-related transactions to ensure that vehicles on the road have minimum liability coverage.
  • Vehicle Title or Registration: A copy of the vehicle's current title or registration may be required to accompany the specialty plate application. This serves as proof that the applicant owns the vehicle and has the right to request custom plates for it. If the vehicle is leased, documentation to this effect, identifying the leasing company as the title holder, might be necessary.
  • DMV Form RV-707, or the Lease or Lien Holder Consent Form: This form is crucial if the vehicle is leased or if there's a lien against it. It obtains permission from the lessor or lien holder for the alteration of the plates, acknowledging that the specialty plates will be affixed to the vehicle.
  • Payment Receipt: A receipt acknowledging payment of the appropriate fees for the specialty plates must be included with the application. This includes any special plate fees, processing charges, and potential donations associated with the chosen plate design. Ensuring the correct amount is paid helps in avoiding delays in the processing of the application.

Understanding the necessary documentation and forms that may accompany a Nebraska Specialty Plates form is vital for a smooth application process. Each document plays a specific role in verifying the eligibility of the applicant and the vehicle for the specialty plates, ensuring that all legal and procedural requirements are met. Encouraging vehicle owners to gather and prepare these documents beforehand can significantly expedite the application process, bringing them one step closer to showcasing their personalized plates on Nebraska roads.

Similar forms

The Nebraska Specialty Plates form is similar to other standard vehicle registration forms used by Departments of Motor Vehicles (DMVs) across the United States. Like those forms, it requires the registered owner's information, including name, address, and contact information, as well as specific vehicle details like the vehicle identification number (VIN), current plate number, and title number. This form structure ensures that all necessary information is collected in a consistent manner, facilitating a streamlined process for both the applicant and the DMV. The emphasis on clear, concise instructions and the provision of various plate options, including the choice between standard and specialty plates, mirrors the user-focused design of vehicle registration forms nationwide. Additionally, the form includes instructions for application submission and fees, which is a common feature in vehicle-related government documents to aid applicants in completing their transactions successfully.

Furthermore, the Nebraska Specialty Plates form bears a resemblance to specific sections of a lease agreement that involve vehicle use and restrictions, especially for leased vehicles. Most lease agreements contain detailed information about the lessor and lessee, similar to how this form requires information about the vehicle's registered owner and, if applicable, the leasing company. In lease agreements, there's often a stipulation regarding the use of the vehicle, just as this form differentiates between vehicle types and intended uses with options for passenger vehicles, motorcycles/autocycles, and trailers. Both documents serve the purpose of identifying responsibilities and providing a record of important details about the vehicle in question. Key similarities include the focus on clear identification of parties involved, vehicle information, and conditions of use, which are crucial for legal and registration purposes.

Dos and Don'ts

When filling out the Nebraska Specialty Plates form, it's important to pay attention to detail and follow the instructions carefully to ensure your application is processed correctly. Here are seven things you should do, and seven things you shouldn't do, to help guide you through the process.

    Things You Should Do:
  • Check message availability online at the provided DMV link to ensure your desired plate message isn't already taken.
  • Provide the name of the registered owner exactly as it appears on the vehicle's title to avoid any discrepancies.
  • Clearly indicate the type of vehicle (e.g., Passenger, Motorcycle/Autocycle, Trailer) to ensure the correct plate type is issued.
  • Include a complete and accurate VIN, title number, and current plate number to assist with vehicle identification.
  • Select your preferred specialty plate option and fill in your message choices in order of preference, understanding the first available choice will be processed.
  • Attach a check or money order for the exact amount due, including any applicable specialty plate and processing fees.
  • Review the application for completeness and accuracy before submitting to avoid delays.
    Things You Shouldn't Do:
  • Don't leave any required fields blank. Incomplete applications will be returned unprocessed.
  • Avoid using offensive or objectionable language in your plate message; such submissions will be rejected.
  • Don't use messages that conflict with the DMV's current numbering system or might be already registered.
  • Don't forget to specify your county of registration, especially if you reside in Douglas, Lancaster, or Sarpy counties, where county message plates are available.
  • Avoid submitting the form without the correct fee; applications without the proper payment will not be processed.
  • Do not attempt to reserve a plate message by phone or online; the application must be submitted with your selected choices.
  • Don't ignore the office location section if you are a resident of Douglas or Lancaster County, as this specifies where your plates will be picked up.

Misconceptions

  • One common misconception is that only specific types of vehicles are eligible for specialty plates in Nebraska. However, a vast array of vehicles including passenger vehicles, motorcycles/autocycles, trailers, mini trucks, and mobile homes can apply for these plates.

  • Many people believe that specialty plates are only for personal use and cannot be ordered for leased vehicles. In reality, leased vehicles are eligible for specialty plates as long as the leasing company has obtained a Nebraska title in their name for the vehicle.

  • There's a myth that non-resident military personnel cannot request Nebraska specialty plates. This is incorrect; non-resident military members can apply for specialty plates by providing a copy of their vehicle’s current registration.

  • Some think that if they miss the application deadline, they can't get a specialty plate until the next year. This is not true; applications for specialty plates are processed throughout the year based on when they are received.

  • It's a common misconception that the specialty plate application process is lengthy and complicated. The application instructions are detailed yet straightforward, aiming to make the process as simple as possible for applicants.

  • Another incorrect belief is that specialty plates are much more expensive than standard plates. While there is an additional fee for specialty plates, the cost varies based on the type of plate and the cause it supports, making some options quite affordable.

  • People often think they can't check the availability of their desired plate message before applying. Applicants can check message availability online, ensuring their desired phrase or combination is likely to be approved before they apply.

  • There's a misconception that once ordered, the message on a specialty plate can't be changed. If an applicant wants to change their plate message, they can do so by submitting a new application form with the new desired message and the appropriate fee.

  • Finally, many believe that specialty plates can take months to arrive. While applicants are advised to allow 4 to 6 weeks for delivery, this timeframe ensures that the manufacturing and delivery process is thorough, often resulting in earlier arrivals.

Key takeaways

When applying for Nebraska Specialty Plates, understanding the procedure and requirements is crucial for a smooth process. Here are key takeaways to consider:

  • Application Details: The form requires comprehensive information about the vehicle and its registered owner, including name, address, vehicle identification number (VIN), current plate number, and the county of registration. If the vehicle is leased, include the lessor's name.
  • Choice of Plate: Applicants have the option to choose from various specialty plates with different themes, such as Breast Cancer Awareness, The Good Life, Support Our Troops, and more. Additionally, there are options for message plates or numeric plates, with specific character limits dependent on the plate type.
  • Eligibility Criteria: To apply for a specialty plate, the vehicle must have a Nebraska-issued title in the name of the applicant. There are exceptions for leased vehicles, which must have a Nebraska title in the name of the leasing company, and non-resident military personnel, who must provide their current registration.
  • Fees and Renewals: There is a fee associated with each specialty plate, which varies depending on the type of plate selected. A check or money order for the correct amount must accompany the application. It is important to note that specialty plate renewal fees are due annually, in the same month as the vehicle registration, and are paid to the County Treasurer Motor Vehicle Office.
  • Plate Pickup and Approval Process: After the application is processed and approved, an approval letter is sent to the applicant, indicating the approved message or assigned number, and the date the plates will be available for pickup at the County Treasurer Motor Vehicle Office. Current plates and registration must be surrendered at the time of specialty plate registration. Applicants are advised to allow 4 to 6 weeks for the plates to arrive.

Correctly filling out the Nebraska Specialty Plates form and understanding the associated procedures greatly increases the likelihood of a successful application. It’s essential for applicants to carefully review their choices and ensure that all required information is accurately provided to avoid any delays or issues with their request.
